RubyHawk Productions presents
Horizons and Higher Mountains Reading
with Live Discussion
Set in 1981, Horizons and Higher Mountains is the sequel to Brown’s acclaimed play THE FIGHT, and explores grief, forgiveness, and the fragile work of repair in the wake of the Black Power Movement’s decline.
Through intimate, character-driven storytelling, the play follows individuals and families reckoning with personal loss, political disillusionment, and the question of how to carry forward when the movements that once sustained them have fractured. Rooted in poetic realism, the piece invites audiences into moments of quiet reckoning as much as emotional confrontation, asking what it truly means to heal individually and collectively.
This MLK Day reading marks the first time the work will be heard aloud with actors before a live audience. The evening will include a post-reading talkback, offering space for reflection and conversation about the play’s themes and their resonance in our current moment.
Written and directed by Newark-born playwright, director, poet Afrika Brown, Horizons and Higher Mountains continues her exploration of Black interior lives, cultural memory, and radical emotional honesty.
Come bear witness, reflect, and engage in dialogue through art on this day of remembrance and purpose.
Free with RSVP. RSVP required for entry.
