Joya Powell

Joya Powell received her MA in Dance Education from NYU and her BA in Latin American Studies and Creative Writing from Columbia University. Throughout her career she has danced with choreographers Neta Pulvermacher, Jacqulyn Buglisi, and Katiti King. Her choreography has been showcased at The Performance Project @ University Settlement (AIR 2012-2013), York College in Toronto, The Flea Theater, Dance New Amsterdam, Casa del Prado Theatre in San Diego, The Outlet Dance Project in NJ, Riverside Theatre, The Lion Theatre, Montgomery College Theater in Maryland, Schwab Auditorium in PA, Dixon Place, BAAD!, E. 14th St. Y, and the 13th St. Theatre. Her Off-Broadway choreography includes: JOBThe Minstrel ShowAre You Not Entertained?True Bible Tales, and The Shakes: Romeo and Juliet for the The Flea Theater. She has been a guest artist at Penn State, Hobart Williams-Smith Colleges, Queens College, and Brooklyn College’s 2014 MFA Theater/Playwriting production of Amina Henry’s Happily Ever. Ms. Powell is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at The Center for Dance, Movement, and Somatic Learning at Stony Brook University. As Artistic Director/Choreographer of Movement of the People Dance Company she is dedicated to connecting cultures and finding ways for underserved communities to use dance as a means for self-empowerment.
