Shared Evening: Garnet Henderson and Anna Peretz Rogovoy
Contemporary choreographers Garnet Henderson and Anna Peretz Rogovoy will present their second shared evening of dances, “Our” (Henderson) and “Major Crater” (Rogovoy), both premieres. Both New York City-based dance artists who work with formally rigorous and technically astute movement, Henderson and Rogovoy first co-presented their work in June 2019 at HERE Arts Center after several years of offstage dialogue.
Henderson’s “Our,” a duet performed by Henderson and Rebecca Hadley, grew out of a previous duet entitled “Our Bodies Get Too Far Apart.” The work carries forward the previous dance’s themes of striving individually and together, evolving into an examination of interdependence and reliance. It asks what we owe to one another and what it means to need another person.
Rogovoy’s contribution to the program, “Major Crater,” is a quartet exploring disruption and variation in pattern and cycle. Drawing abstract inspiration from the natural world (shifts in texture and volume of light at dusk) as well as pre-existing art works (George Balanchine’s “Serenade”), “Major Crater’s” emergent narrative is one of availability and resilience. Garnet Henderson grew up in the mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Her work has been presented in New York at HERE Arts, the West End Theater, the 92nd Street Y, Triskelion Arts, and Gibney Dance. She was a Women in Motion 2017-2018 commissioned artist. Garnet holds a BA cum laude in Dance and English Literature from Columbia University and has performed in works by Ori Flomin, Kyle Abraham, David Parker, Larry Keigwin, Reggie Wilson, Colleen Thomas, Heidi Henderson, Faye Driscoll, Mark Dendy, and Jordan Morley. Anna Peretz Rogovoy grew up in Western Massachusetts, earned an undergraduate degree from Bennington College, and lives in Brooklyn. Some places where her dances have appeared include HERE Arts, JACK, the 92nd Street Y, University Settlement, Triskelion Arts, the Judson Memorial Church, Eden’s Expressway, Vital Joint, The Tank, Bennington College, No. Six Depot Cafe & Roastery, and the Cocoon Theatre.
