Talea’s iNSIDE Out series fosters creative discussions and interactive environments that allow musicians and audiences to share how—and why—they listen. We design programs and choose venues that facilitate post-concert receptions and socializing: performers, composers, and guest curators talk with the audience to share more about the context of each work’s development and how the musical language or thematic ideas from the program are connected.

January 18: Musical Homages
Pauline Oliveros: Quintuplets Play Pen: Homage to Ruth Crawford (2001)
James Weeks: Honey Celebration (after Schubert) (2005)
Oliver Knussen: upon one note (after Purcell) (1995)
György Kurtág: Hommage à R. Sch (1990)

January 20: Time, Cycles, Spirals
Talea pianist Steve Beck & cellist Chris Gross, with composer Fred Lerdahl explore Lerdahl’s Duo (2017) for cello and piano.

The New York Times calls the Talea Ensemble “…a vital part of the New York contemporary-classical scene” and Time Out New York says, “The Talea Ensemble makes modernist music not just accessible but positively engaging through its combination of commanding virtuosity and infectious commitment.” This peerless ensemble boasts an impressive roster of artists, countless world premiere projects, and the lofty goal of “Building communities through innovative musical experiences, cultivating curious listeners, and engaging audiences in musical creativity and cultural exploration.”

The Talea Ensemble is comprised of twenty-one of New York City’s finest musicians, with a mission to build communities through innovative musical experiences, cultivate curious listeners, and engage audiences in musical creativity and cultural exploration.  Talea is sought after both in the U.S. and Europe for its range, precision, risk-taking, and performance quality.

Recipients of the 2014 CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, Talea has brought to life more than 30 commissions of major new works since it was founded in 2008. Recent festival engagements include performances at Lincoln Center Festival, Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, the Fromm Concerts at Harvard University, Warsaw Autumn Festival, Wien Modern, Chicago’s Contempo series, Royaumont Voix Nouvelles, Vancouver New Music, and many others.

Talea’s recordings have been distributed worldwide on the Wergo, Gravina Musica, Tzadik, Innova, and New World Records labels, and been radio-broadcast on ORF (Austria), HRF (Germany), and WQXR’s Q2. Talea also assumes an ongoing role in supporting a new generation of composers, and has undertaken residencies in music departments at Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, New York University, and many others.
