2016 Bat Auditions

Seeking Non-Eq Actors and Performing Artists at The Flea Theater

The Flea Theater under Artistic Director Niegel Smith and Producing Director Carol Ostrow is seeking actors to join our resident volunteer acting company, The Bats. Now in its 20th year, The Bats are a large, diverse company who appear in new plays by world-class playwrights as well as select up and coming writers, original performance art, devised theater, reinterpretations of the classics, and our late night play competition Serials.

All auditions will take place at The Flea Theater, 41 White St. Sign-up sheets will be available at the theater one hour before call time. Do come early- don’t procrastinate- the available slots are often filled very quickly. Please see below for the full schedule of auditions. We will be happy to see you anytime we have availability.

Actors should prepare 2 contrasting monologues (one comic and one dramatic – preferably one of these two will also be classical), 16 bars of a song that shows off your range and style (to be preformed a capella) and any other skills you would like to showcase (instrument, mime, magic tricks, etc). Please bring a headshot/resume.

As part of our commitment to reflecting the cultural diversity of New York City, we are hosting several culturally specific auditions in addition to a general open call. Of course your identity is more nuanced than these categories, but it is our hope that these calls serve as an opportunity to combat the underrepresentation of certain peoples in our field. All prospective Bats are warmly welcomed and encouraged to attend any posted audition slot with which they identify, or any day that fits best in their own schedule, regardless of identity.
