Mac Wellman: Perfect Catastrophes

August 24 - November 1, 2019
Now on-sale to the public!

Three-time Obie Award winning playwright and poet and one of The Flea’s original co-founders, Mac Wellman has always stood at the vanguard of dramatic truth. His plays challenge our most deeply rooted political and social issues. Wellman makes (non)sense of white supremacy, the leaders of our nation and our institutions of higher learning, all the while daring to push theater past good intentions. This fall, The Flea honors Mac Wellman. His plays have inspired a generation of writers and his voice must be lifted and heard. Join us for Perfect Catastrophes, a festival of Mac Wellman plays at The Flea!

The Invention of Tragedy

September 7 - October 20, 2019
The Sam

A chorus of students, all alike and all unalike, are trying like the devil to tell a simple story—perhaps the story about the tragedy of the Sandwich Man, with sandwich boards upon which nothing is written, and hence, say nothing. Wellman’s examination of the post-9/11 world and America’s general and genial acceptance of the Iraq war.

The Sandalwood Box & The Fez

September 26 - November 1, 2019
The Siggy

In The Sandalwood Box, college student Marsha Gates lost her voice. On her way to speech therapy, she encounters Professor Claudia Mitchell, who captures the most captivating catastrophes of the world and preserves them in a sandalwood box. In The Fez, the charmed spell of the theater has somehow absented itself, and something strange happens. A play that was originally printed on a tee shirt is finally produced!

Emerged Nation

November 21 - October 24, 2019
The Sam

For the company’s November 21-24, 2019 season, Rea-Fisher will present the world premiere of “Emerged Nation,” an evening-length work comprised of three movements that each possess a unique message and emotional arc examining a nation in transformation. Inspired by the shifts in America’s civil and social mores, the work delves into the complex emotional landscape created by immigration, cultural acclimation and diversity.

Not Then, Not Yet

November 13 - November 16, 2019
The Sam

Choreographer Tiffany Mills’s Not then, not yet, created in collaboration with Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón and French vocalist/composer Muriel Louveau, examines states of transition, drawing inspiration from the liminal space between endings and new beginnings. The artists’ initial interest in liminality comes from Mary Shelley’s life and early writing—specifically her examination of the threshold between creation and destruction, integration and isolation. Ruminating on what it means to be in between, the collaborators now look at portals and passageways through a 21st-century lens. Negrón’s blend of electro-acoustics mixed with classical instrumentation and found sounds, Louveau’s extreme vocal registers and neoclassical influences, and Mills’s raw and unhinged movement create a kinetically charged world that speaks to the subconscious.
